Amazon S3 storage classes

Each Amazon S3 object is assigned a storage class. When you list components in an S3 bucket, the system determines the storage class for each object. Amazon S3 provides storage classes for the things you store. You select a class based on your use situation and performance access needs. All of these storage devices are more durable. Storage classes for frequently accessed objects

Amazon S3 provides the following storage classes for performance-sensitive use situations (requiring millisecond-faster access) and frequently visited data:

S3 Standard 

Default storage type. When you upload an object without specifying a storage class, Amazon S3 allocates an S3 centralized storage class.

Reduced Redundancy 

The RRS storage class is intended for non-critical, measurable information that can be stored with less redundant systems than the S3 Basic Storage class.

Storage classes for infrequently accessed objects

Storage classes S3 Standard-IA and S3 One Zone-IA are intended for long-term and rare accessed data. These objects, better suited for infrequently accessed data, are charged a retrieval fee by Amazon S3. See Amazon S3 Pricing for more information.

You can choose the S3 Standard-IA and S3 One Zone-IA storage classes, for instance, to:

  • Backups are stored here.
  • Older, infrequently accessed data still need millisecond access. When uploading data, for example, you can select the S3 Standard storage class and use Lifecycle Configuration to instruct Amazon S3 to transfer objects to the S3 Standard-IA or S3 One Zone-IA classes.

Storage classes for archiving objects

The storage classes S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval, S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval, and S3 Glacier Deep Archive are intended for low-cost data documenting. These storage classes differ as follows:

S3 Glacier Instant Retrieval 

Use to store data that is only obtained infrequently and needs millisecond retrieval. Stored data in the S3 Glacier Quick Recovery storage class saves money compared to the S3 Basic storage class while maintaining the same delay and throughput performance. S3 Glacier Instant Recovery costs more to access data than S3 Standard-IA.

S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval 

Use for records where data fragments must be regained in minutes. The S3 Glacier Adaptive Retrieval Storage class stores data for a minimum of 90 days and can be obtained in 1-5 minutes utilizing Quick Retrieval. Retrieval times are adaptable, and bulk records in 5-12 hours are free.

Storage class for Amazon S3 on Outposts

You can construct S3 buckets on your AWS Outpost assets and store and retrieve items locally for applications that need local access to data, local data analysis, and local data residence with Amazon S3 on Outposts.
